We have used Monmouth Coffee since we opened because we believe it is one of the best coffees available. Monmouth has been roasting coffee for decades, with a focus on quality, careful sourcing and flavour.
For us, it fits naturally with the way we do things at Kumquat: simple, thoughtful and chosen properly.
Monmouth Coffee has been part of London’s coffee culture since 1978, when it began roasting and selling coffee from its original shop on Monmouth Street in Covent Garden. In the early days, the beans were roasted in the basement on old direct-flame machines, before the company later moved its roasting to Bermondsey.
Today, Monmouth sources coffee from single farms, estates and cooperatives, building relationships with the people who grow, pick and process the beans. Their approach is careful and direct: they travel to visit producers, understand each coffee properly, and roast with the aim of bringing out its natural character.
They have become one of London’s most respected coffee names because they helped shape the city’s appreciation for properly sourced, freshly roasted coffee. Their shops in Covent Garden, Borough Market and Bermondsey are known for quality, simplicity and serious coffee without unnecessary fuss.
Fresh pastries, Monmouth coffee, loose-leaf tea and cakes from the kitchen, served at a gentler pace during the morning hours.
Mornings at Kumquat are intentionally simple. Less about a large breakfast and more about taking a moment to slow down. Sitting outside on The Pantiles with a cappuccino and a warm croissant, watching the town gradually come to life.
There is something particularly special about The Pantiles early in the day: quiet conversation, warm sunlight and the smell of fresh coffee drifting through the colonnade.
It is a simple offering, but one we care deeply about.
